Jazz pianist / psychiatrist Denny Zeitlin must surely claim two of the most exotic career choices extant, and doing the following interview gave me pleasure twice over. Aside from the obvious pleasure of meeting Dr. Zeitlin for the first time, having enjoyed his music for so many years, I had the double pleasure of reading his words again in order to prepare this interview for publication. He is a man for whom passion is the foundation of thought and lucidity is the medium of delivery. Also, having grown up in the vicinity of Chicago myself, I had a great deal of empathy for his story of a young man, pumped with enthusiasm for a music that struck him like a bolt out of the blue, slipping into the nightclubs by any means necessary. Today, Denny Zeitlin seems like a very happy man. In this business, that says an awful lot.
