It’s impossible not to notice the unusual circumstances surrounding the career of Herbie Hancock, and so, of course, we began by talking about his phenomenal success in the record business. Our conversation took place not long after the release of the movie ‘Round Midnight, in which he and saxophonist Dexter Gordon had received very positive reviews for their acting roles. Interestingly, and perhaps somewhat ironically, Dexter Gordon was also a participant in Herbie’s first great commercial success, the recording of his hit song “Watermelon Man”. Herbie and I spoke in a hotel room in downtown Manhattan, just one of the many stops on his endless rounds of the world’s jazz capitals. Herbie is truly a contemporary jazz entrepreneur, as well as one of the finest living practitioners of the art of the keyboard.
