Johnny Griffin Talking Jazz
Tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin is known as the “Little Giant,” because, for a man of small physical stature, he casts an enormous shadow over the jazz firmament. His style, technique and attitude place him among that select group of players who emerged during the heyday of bebop, carrying the flame of Parker, Gillespie, et. al.. A “jazz warrior,” who managed to keep the fire in his playing through years of constant global traveling, it is a sad fact that his music receives scant attention in today’s media. However, it is easy to predict that as his work, both present and past, with such legends as Thelonious Monk, continues to spread the word, Johnny Griffin will ultimately be recognized as one of the music’s true giants.
